It is with deep regret, but with an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our young girls, that we announce the postponement of the “Books Before Boys” Girl-Child Empowerment Initiative, originally scheduled to hold on 17th July.
This initiative was conceived with a clear and noble vision: to inspire the girl child to embrace education, cultivate a lifelong reading culture, and recognize the transformative power of knowledge as the surest path to personal growth, confidence, and leadership. It is a movement designed to encourage our daughters to choose books over distractions, pursue excellence through learning, and build a future founded on education, discipline, and purpose.
As part of the program, participants were also to receive mentorship on menstrual hygiene, the proper use of sanitary pads, personal hygiene, self-esteem, and making positive life choices, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to thrive both academically and personally.
However, following a careful assessment of the prevailing security situation across parts of our constituency, it has become evident that proceeding with a gathering of young girls at this time would not be in their best interest. Their safety remains our highest priority, and no noble cause should ever come at the expense of the lives and security of those we seek to empower.
This postponement is not a cancellation of our vision. Rather, it is a responsible decision taken out of genuine concern for every participant, parent, volunteer, and stakeholder. As soon as the security situation improves and peace is restored, a new date will be announced, and the program will be held with even greater impact and enthusiasm.
We sincerely appreciate the understanding, patience, and unwavering support of parents, community leaders, and everyone who believes in this initiative. Your encouragement strengthens our commitment to investing in the future of the girl child despite the challenges before us.
Until then, we encourage every young girl to keep reading, keep learning, and keep believing in herself. Books remain faithful companions, and knowledge remains the greatest form of empowerment.
Dear Otukpo & Ohimini sisters and daughters, study hard. Be so good they can’t ignore you, and let your success make the loudest noise.
Remember:
“A smart girl learns from her mistakes, but a wise girl studies so she doesn’t make them.”
Together, we look forward to a safer tomorrow when we can gather once again to celebrate education, inspire greatness, and remind every girl that her dreams are stronger than today’s challenges and her future is brighter than any obstacle she may face.
Signed:
Hon. Amb. Lilian Adoyi Ofiebor
